Ask Lawmakers to Reconsider Cuts to Childrens AssistanceTake Action!
Reduction to Child-only Cases Is Neither Fiscally nor Morally Prudent
The current budget proposal reduces CalWORKs funding in many areas. But one of the cuts recently added – $100 million from assistance to children whose parents are no longer eligible for CalWORKs– will result in extremely harmful cuts to the truly destitute among us.
Please ask your Senator and Assembly Member to reconsider these ill-advised reductions.
In “child-only” cases, the adult(s) in a family have exhausted their CalWORKs eligibility, but the state continues to help the children. Under the current proposal, a family with two children will find their benefit reduced from $520 to $425 per month – that is for all expenses in a given month! The proposed budget also reduces the time limit for CalWORKs aid from 60 to 48 months.
The budget negotiations are taking place in an atmosphere that avoids reduction that might alarm certain interest groups. Few are advocating for the poor. As people of faith, we are called to help our neighbors in extraordinary ways, not to let them languish ignored and forgotten.
The wellbeing of each and all of our children should be our first concern. Ask our elected officials not to view these children “as the problem, but as people who can become the principal builders of a new and more human future for everyone.” (John Paul II, Message for the World Day of Peace, 2000)
Please ask your Senator and Assembly Member to reconsider this cut to CalWORKs.
